Dudley Randall (1914-2000) created the Broadside Press in 1965 in Detroit (Mich.). He ran the press out of his home on limited funds, managing to publish the major African-American poetry of the period. Randall supported himself as a librarian at the University of Detroit. He put all profits back into the press. In 1978, Black Enterprise magazine called Randall "The father of the black poetry movement." He sold the press in 1985. Randall died in Aug. 2000. Renowned scholar of language and the arts, Richard Long, was born on Feb 9, 1927, in Philadelphia, where he spent his childhood. Long attended Temple University, where he received his B.A. in 1947 and his M.A. in 1948.
