The collection consists of the papers of Richard A. Long from 1951-1976. Includes articles, poems, and plays written by Long and galley proofs of articles, poems, and short stories by African American authors including William Henry Sheppard, Jan Vansina, Daniel Biebuyck, James E. Lewis, Frank Willett, and Alain Locke. The collection also contains six audio tapes discussing Broadside Press (Detroit, Mi.) in an interview with William Whitsitt, General Manager; poet Dudley Randall; and African American artists.

Randall (1914-2000) created the Broadside Press in 1965 in Detroit (Mich.). He ran the press out of his home on limited funds, managing to publish the major African-American poetry of the period. Randall supported himself as a librarian at the University of Detroit. He put all profits back into the press. Renowned scholar of language and the arts, Richard Long, was born on Feb 9, 1927, in Philadelphia, where he spent his childhood. Long attended Temple University, where he received his B.A. in 1947 and his M.A. in 1948.
